"LEAVE KATE MOSS ALONE: GO CATCH SOME CRIMINALS", FREE MARKET AND CIVIL LIBERTIES THINK TANK TELLS PROSECUTORS

The Libertarian Alliance, the radical free market and civil liberties policy institute, today calls on the Crown Prosecution Service to drop its investigation into the private life of the well-known fashion model Kate Moss. Miss Moss could be charged with possession of cocaine. If convicted, she could in theory go to prison for seven years and face an unlimited fine.

Libertarian Alliance Director, Dr Sean Gabb, says:

"If Kate Moss wants to sniff cocaine - not that I would for a moment claim she does - that is her right. It is monstrous that there should be laws against the use of mood-altering substances.

"It is also a waste of our tax money and a symptom of the gloating contempt in which we are held, when the authorities decide to spend six months investigating this non-crime while real crimes go unpunished and even uninvestigated.

"The Libertarian Alliance offers Miss Moss its full support, and encourages her to continue her firm and dignified refusal to cooperate with the authorities.

"Her struggle is our struggle."

The Libertarian Alliance believes:

* That there should be no laws to control the development, manufacture, possession, advertising, sale or use by adults of any pharmaceutical or mood-altering substance;

* That, for the achievement of the above, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and all similar legislation should be immediately repealed;

* That, for the achievement of the above, the Drug Trafficking Offences Act 1986, the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, and all other laws regarding "money laundering", should be immediately repealed;

* That, for the achievement of the above, the Medicines Act 1968 should be immediately repealed, together with all other laws that regulate what and how pharmaceutical substances may be sold;

* That all agencies of inspection and control set up to implement the above laws should be immediately abolished, and that their records be destroyed;

* That all investigatory powers given to the authorities for the prosecution of offences under the above laws should be immediately abolished;

* That all persons found guilty under the above laws should be pardoned and where appropriate compensated;

* That, without any increase in the burden of taxes elsewhere, the excise duties on tobacco and alcohol should be reduced to match the lowest level in any of the other 24 member states of the European Union;

* That all the police officers and Crown Prosecution Service lawyers who ordered the investigation of Kate Moss and her alleged taking of cocaine should be dismissed from their jobs
